Serbia’s sour cherry, the oblačinska višnja, to benefit from Geographical Indication status

05/08/2014

The oblacinska cherry, named after the village where it was first cultivated, is a traditional product renowned for its balance of sweet and sour, influenced by the local growing and climate conditions. Small and large producers – such as SB Srbislav Milovanovic and Nektar or Foodland – recognize the potential of Geographical Indication (GI) status in marketing their products more effectively and achieve greater market access.

Working together with groups of producers as well as the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management and EBRD clients in the sector, a joint FAO and EBRD programme works toward the development of Geographical Indications (GIs) to add value, particularly to local producers, in Serbia’s horticultural sector. The development of premium product labels is considered as one way to improve the efficiency and inclusiveness of agricultural and food systems.
