National workshop on SDG indicators 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 (Kenya, Nairobi)

10/06/2024 - 15/06/2024

COMESA, in collaboration with FAO and Statistics Norway (SSB), hosted a regional workshop on Food Security Statistics Analysis in Nairobi, Kenya from June 10 to June 15, 2024.

As the custodian agency for SDG indicator 2.1.1 (PoU) and 2.1.2 (FIES), FAO promotes the adoption of the FIES and PoU methodologies by national governmental institutions and to train these institutions on data analysis and reporting. Since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mozambique has made significant strides in monitoring their progress. In 2017, the SDG National Reference Group (GRN-SDG) was established in the country which played a crucial role in coordinating the monitoring process, engaging various stakeholders, and preparing the Voluntary National Review in 2020.

As part of the COMESA-Statistics Norway project, the workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of national institutions in COMESA member states, particularly Somalia, to analyze food security data and produce reliable indicators. It focused on data from Household Consumption and Expenditure Surveys (HCES), with the goal of supporting evidence-based policies and interventions to improve food security in the region.

Outcomes:

  • Increased proficiency among workshop participants in data processing, cleaning, and analysis techniques for food security monitoring.
  • Generation of comprehensive food security indicators, including prevalence of undernourishment, prevalence of food insecurity in the population, the cost of a healthy diet, among others.
  • Compilation of insights into Somali dietary habits, food preferences, and food consumption trends.
  • Production of draft versions of Somali national factsheets containing relevant food security statistics and analysis.
  • Creation of platforms for collaborative discussions and information exchange between SNBS, COMESA, FAO, and Statistics Norway.
  • Training materials and resources tailored to the specific needs of NSO staff members involved in food security analysis.

Participants:

A total of 7 participants from the Somali National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS), the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Agriculture attended the workshop. Additionally, trainers from FAO and COMESA facilitated the sessions.
