Harnessing the SDGs to secure women’s rights to land

23/03/2021 - 23/03/2021

Major international processes and frameworks, such as the SDGs, have recognised that strengthening women’s ownership and control over land is a way to empower women and also contribute to the eradication of poverty and hunger.

Despite the measures countries have taken to promote gender equality, women continue to be significantly disadvantaged, relative to men, in many areas, including rights to land. While some progress has been made, more needs to be done.

The SDGs offer a unique opportunity to foster countries’ commitment to women’s land rights and to ensure the adoption and implementation of policy and legal reforms.

This event will present the experience of different countries, showing how they have adopted measures to secure women’s land rights. It will also outline the results and lessons learned based on the progress achieved on the reporting process of the SDG indicator related to women’s legal land rights.
