The banana sector is a strategic component of Malawi’s agrifood system, supporting food security, nutrition, rural employment, and income generation for smallholder farmers while serving as an important safety net for rural communities. Aligned with Malawi Vision 2063, the National Banana Sector Development Plan targets key value‑chain constraints through improved infrastructure, access to quality and disease‑resistant inputs, promotion of good agricultural practices, and expanded market access to enhance productivity, resilience and competitiveness.
