Enhancing Kisumu Women Street Food Vendors' Operations

14/09/2022

As part of a comprehensive plan towards bolstering the livelihoods of Kisumuwomen street food vendors have recently been equipped with shade umbrellas and aprons, providing protection against adverse weather conditions and elevating hygiene standards during business operations.

This FAO-funded initiative was implemented by Practical Action, in collaboration with the County Government of Kisumu, aiming to empower street food vendors. Building on previous training sessions focused on food safety and quality management in pilot areas such as Kondele, Nyalenda, and Nyamasaria, the vendors are now armed with essential skills to enhance their businesses and ensure the delivery of healthy, safe food to Kisumu residents.

The program is in line with FAO's Green Cities Initiative and Urban Food Agenda, which are contributing to sustainable development, food security, and nutrition in urban, peri-urban areas, and nearby rural spaces. It encompasses various policies, programs, and initiatives developed and implemented in collaboration with various stakeholders, including civil society, academia, UN and international agencies, City Networks, and relevant public and private bodies.

Mr. Erick Ogadho, the FAO Liaison Officer, commended Practical Action for their support in realizing this initiative during the handover ceremony. Addressing the street vendors, he emphasized their critical role, as many Kisumu residents rely on street food. Stressing the importance of maintaining cleanliness, he urged vendors to prioritize handwashing and keeping their environment spotless to attract more customers—a sentiment echoed by Madam Monica Ajigo from the County Department of Agriculture.

Expressing their gratitude, a spokesperson for the street vendors conveyed the positive impact of the initiative, alleviating challenges posed by harsh weather conditions and enhancing their overall business environment.

The collaboration between partners, the County Government, and street vendors reflects a collective effort to create a more sustainable and supportive environment for Kisumu's street food industry.
