Fusarium Tropical race 4 (TR4)
Global banana production is currently under serious threat from the latest strain of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense known as Tropical Race 4 (TR4). In response to this threat, numerous global efforts are being coordinated by various stakeholders. The World Banana Forum has enhanced its fight against this pathogen by building on the success of its TR4 Task Force, established in 2013.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the WBF has also launched the TR4 Global Network (TR4GN). The TR4GN serves as a central platform for exchange and collaboration, functioning as a hub for raising awareness and preventing the spread of the fungus. This network facilitates the collection, development, and dissemination of tools and resources to help curb the spread of TR4.
This initiative is critical because banana production plays a key role in global food security and poverty reduction. Bananas and plantains, grown in over 135 countries, are a staple food for around 400 million people and provide a vital source of income for many developing nations.
