Ghana is a key player in the global banana trade, with exports to the European Union reaching 75,000 tonnes in 2023 (DG AGRI, 2023), generating USD 52.47 million in revenue—primarily from exports to France, the United Kingdom, and Italy (Ghana Statistical Service, 2023). The country cultivates approximately 9,239 hectares of dessert bananas and an additional 404,077 hectares of plantains and cooking bananas (FAOSTAT, 2023), reinforcing its strategic role as a major banana-producing country in West Africa.

In response to the growing threat posed by Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race 4 (TR4), key national stakeholders, including the Banana Producers Association (BPA), the Association of Banana and Other Fruit Producers in Africa (AFRUIBANA), and the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Department (PPRSD) under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), have engaged in a series of consultations. These culminated in a national stakeholder meeting held in Accra on 17 June 2025, where it was agreed that the first step toward coordinated national action would be the organization of a sensitization forum involving all relevant actors across the banana value chain.

The World Banana Forum (WBF) was identified as a strategic partner to support this process, particularly due to its capacity to deliver virtual sensitization programmes, aligning with national preferences.

This webinar responds directly to that request, with the objective of raising awareness about the disease and supporting the formulation of a national action plan for TR4 prevention, monitoring, and management.

Objectives

  • Raise awareness among national and local stakeholders on the biology, epidemiology, risks, diagnostic tools and early signs of Fusarium Wilt TR4.
  • Share technical knowledge and global experiences on TR4 prevention, detection, containment and response.
  • Strengthen stakeholder engagement across the banana value chain to ensure integrated and timely interventions.
