The theme of this year’s day is ‘The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production’ which centres on the role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production (https://www.un.org/development/desa/youth/international-youth-day-2016.html).  The tagline is ‘International Youth Day 2016: Youth Leading Sustainability’. 

An event to commemorate International Youth Day will be held on Friday, 12 August 2016, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, at the United Nations HQ in New York (ECOSOC Chamber), and the Secretary-General, as well as other high-level speakers, have been invited to participate in the opening. 

The event will showcase the diverse ways that young people contribute to sustainable consumption and production by featuring speakers to discuss different elements of the cycle of production and consumption (including on extraction, production, consumption/access, disposal/recycling, as well as innovation), in “Ted Talk” style.  The concept note for the theme and event programme are attached. (Please kindly refrain from circulating them externally at this time). 

On that note, the UN IANYD can be actively involved on social media with the following hash tags: #YouthDay‪ / #Youth2030 / #GlobalGoals . 

Additionally, since events to celebrate International Youth Day 2016 will take place all over the world, the UN programme  on Youth (DSPD/DESA), once again has a IYD World Map of Events on its webpage (https://www.un.org/development/desa/youth/international-youth-day-2016.html) and a IYD activity toolkit (http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/unyin/documents/Toolkit-IYD-2016.pdf)  for youth.
