The Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture will be held at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 28 – 30 January 2009. The opening meeting will begin at 09.30 hours on Wednesday 28 January 2009.

The Session is being convened under the Regular Programme of the Organization. It will be conducted in Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.

The Working Group was established by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture at its Seventh Session in May 1997, in line with Conference Resolution 3/95. The Commission also requested FAO to continue to develop technical guidelines in relation to the sustainable use and development of animal genetic resources in low and medium input production systems, to further develop methods for improving inventory and characterization of animal genetic resources, to maintain and further develop the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) , and to report on progress at the next Session of the Working Group.
