5th Session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (2009)

Rome, Italy, 28 – 30 January 2009

The Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture will be held at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 28 – 30 January 2009. The opening meeting will begin at 09.30 hours on Wednesday 28 January 2009.

 

The Session is being convened under the Regular Programme of the Organization. It will be conducted in Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.

 

The Working Group was established by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture at its Seventh Session in May 1997, in line with Conference Resolution 3/95. The Eleventh Regular Session of the Commission decided that the Working Group should meet prior to the next Regular Session of the Commission. The Commission requested that the Working Group advise the Commission on options for evaluating progress in the implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, including suggesting potential criteria and indicators to assess implementation progress. The Commission also requested that the Working Group recommend the form and content of future status and trends reports on animal genetic resources, and options for responding to the identification of breeds at risk. The Commission also requested FAO to continue to develop technical guidelines in relation to the sustainable use and development of animal genetic resources in low and medium input production systems, to further develop methods for improving inventory and characterization of animal genetic resources, to maintain and further develop the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) , and to report on progress at the next Session of the Working Group.

 

The members of the Working Group, as designated by the FAO regional groups during the Eleventh Session of the Commission, are as follows:

 

  • Africa: Algeria, Central African Republic, Guinea, Namibia, Uganda
  • Asia: Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand
  • Europe: Finland, France, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey
  • Latin America and the Caribbean: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, Uruguay
  • Near East: Jordan, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic
  • North America: Canada, United States of America
  • Southwest Pacific: Australia, Papua New Guinea

Members of the Commission which are not members of the Working Group may participate in the work of the Working Group in an observer capacity, upon request to the Commission Secretariat. Experts, as well as representatives of specialized international organizations, may also be invited by the Working Group, or the bureau on behalf of the Working Group, to attend its meetings as observers.
