Every year on World Food Day, 16 October, FAO and its member countries commemorate the founding of FAO in 1945. The year 2014 was designated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, as the International Year of Family Farming. This theme was chosen with FAO’s support, to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder farmers. It focuses world attention on the significant role of family farming in eradicating hunger and poverty, providing food security and nutrition, improving livelihoods, managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development, particularly in rural areas.
