Conservation and Management of Grape Genetic Resources continues to be a priority for Armenia

On December 13-14, FAO organized workshops on Conservation and management of Grape Genetic Resources with the participation of grape producers, representatives of RA Ministry of Agriculture, scientific centers, educational institutions, Agricultural Support Marz Centers and wine producing companies. At the workshop, entitled 'Grape propagation material production' Laszlo Kocsis, FAO International Consultant presented the whole process of stock plantation, starting from rootstocks and scions, the best management practices, applied in the world, as well as the whole circle of propogation material production, involving state entities and farmers. At the workshop Ashot Harutyunyan, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture emphasized the important of establishing stock plantations and producing high quality rootstocks for the development of viticulture in Armenia.  

During the workshop entitled 'Management of grape genetic resources,' held on December 14, the participants discussed problems in the field of variety registration and rootstock certification process, establishment of genetic bank standard in case of vegetatively propagated plant material (vine and fruit). Mr. Gyorgy Pernesz, FAO International Consultant presented the relevant legislation and EU regulations, applied in Hungary.
