FAO Project in Taindong Union, Khagrachari ends with the final workshop

FAO Bangladesh has officially touched the end line for the activities of TCP project titled “Emergency Assistance to Support Farmers Affected by Communal Violence in Taindong Union, Khagrachari district, Chittagong hill Tracts” through organizing the final workshop on Wednesday, 24 December 2014, following the power tiller distribution among the five beneficiary groups in Taindong under the same project on the previous day.

The workshop was held at the Parjatan Motel, Khagrachari. Mr. Chaithow Aong Marma, Chairman, Khagrachari Hill District Council (KHDC), attended the workshop as the Chief Guest. Mr. Muhammad Wahiduzzaman, Deputy Commissioner, Khagrachari participated in the workshop as the Special Guest, while Mr. Basudeb Acharjee, Joint Secretary (Development), Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs & Member Secretary, Project Steering Committee chaired the event. Dr. Md Abdus Sattar Mandal, Senior Advisor, FAO Bangladesh was also present at the workshop as the Guest of Honour. The other distinguished guests at the event were dominated by the official from the FAO representation in Bangladesh, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Agriculture officer and Sub Assistant Agriculture Officers from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Khagrachari, government authorities and representatives from local communities along with a large group of the direct beneficiaries of the respective project.

All the initiatives and achieved milestones under this project by FAO Bangladesh were highly appreciated by all the guests at the event. The project took place at one of the remotest region of the country with a very difficult hilly topography. But against the odds, FAO Bangladesh has not only managed to finish all the activities under the projects with great appraisal, but also was able to hand over additional agricultural inputs like power tiller, seed containers and low lift pumps through diligent effort and sensible managerial actions. The agriculture officer and four Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers from DAE, Khagrachari who actively facilitated the project as the trainers, echoed the success story of the project. The local government authority highly recommended an extension of the project, ensuring the sustainable management of the resources and knowledge at the project area for the foreseeable future.

Project Synopsis:

Title: Emergency Assistance to Support Farmers Affected by Communal Violence in Taindong Union, Khagrachari district, Chittagong Hill Tracts

Duration: November, 13 – December, 14

Target Geographical Areas: 16 Villages (Boga para, Sworbeshwar Para, Talukder para, Bandarsingh para, Monodas para, Achalong Marma para, Headman para, Porabari, Laifu Karbari para, Tongha Mohajan para, Krishna Doyal para, Bati tila, Boghoban Tila, Noa para, Bag mara and Buddha Mondir) under Matiranga Upazila in Khagrachari District.

Target Beneficiary: 902 farm families (Chakma, Marma, Tripura and Bengali)

Components:
1. Crop and horticulture component: Boro Rice, Jum Rice, Vegetable seeds and Vegetable Sapling

2. Seed silo, power tiller and irrigation component: Nine hundred and two (902) Seed containers, Five (5) Power tillers and Five (5) Low lift pumps have been distributed among the beneficiary groups. Two (2) RCC water structures are also under process.

3. Training component: Production technologies training on boro rice, jhum cultivation, homestead vegetable and fruits and Awareness training on Food and Nutrition
