FAO in China

A discussion on food technology

26/09/2018

On 26 September, a conference on China's food technology organized by bits&bites food accelerator based in shanghai was held at PWC Shanghai innovation center. Representatives from investors, food companies and food technology start-ups gathered to discuss the future of China's food innovation and investment in the food industry.

Dr. Vincent Martin, FAO representative in China, participated in the discussion on the topic of "Accelerating Agri-Tech Innovations in China" and shared his opinion with the audience.

In the next decades, food technology and innovations that can succeed in China will have worldwide impact. As one of the largest economies, China has a key role to play to feed a population of 1.4 billion people and contribute to global food security. For those bringing radically new ideas to address food security, safety, and nutrition challenges, China market presents huge and unique opportunities.

Through a series of panel discussions, fireside chats, and roundtables, the 2050 China Food Tech Summit addressed these key questions:

  • What disruptive food technologies worldwide can solve the challenges of China's food system?
  • From intellectual property to laws and regulations, what kind of knowledge does food-tech start-ups need to know in navigating the challenges?
  • Driving forces for development of China's online retailers and the opportunities they bring.

In the future, FAO will continue to focus on further exploration and cooperation in these fields, and work together with a wide range of partners to promote agriculture innovation and bring these innovations at scale.
