FAO promotes Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change

Poor communities in developing countries are most vulnerable to climate change and are already facing its impacts, but have contributed least to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Community based adaptation is an approach of strengthening local capacities and enhancing their resilience against adverse climate change impacts. The approach begins by identifying the most vulnerable communities, understanding their perception about the climate related risks and screening the relevance of local adaptation practices. Scientific information on climate change impacts and improved adaptation options need to complement strengthening local adaptation strategies emerged from experiences of the community. FAO supports community based approaches to climate change adaptation through field programmes.
