1st SEALNET Meeting "Quality improvement in Asian Soil Laboratories: towards standardization and harmonization of soil analysis and their interpretation"

The meeting was held in Bogor, Indonesia from 20 - 24 November 2017. The purpose of the meeting were: 

  1. calibrate and harmonize soil testing procedures and practices in laboratories in the ASEAN and wider Asian regions in the context of the Asian Soil Partnership (ASP), and
  2. set up a regional  inter-laboratory proficiency program to implement GA/GC procedures and processes.

About 52 laboratory managers from 17 Asian countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam) met to discuss soil laboratory analysis. The meeting was co-organized by the Global Soil Partnership (FAO), the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) and IRD France, with the contribution of LDD Thailand and ASPAC Australia.

The meeting was successful in engaging and committing participating countries to SEALNET and GLOSOLAN (Global Soil Laboratory Network) objectives, and in defining the 2018 work plan for SEALNET. Ultimately, the Chair and co-Chair for SEALNET were appointed and a working group was established. It was also decided that the second SEALNET meeting will be held in Bhopal, India on 19-23 November 2018.

It was the decision of the members of SEALNET to appoint:

  • Jamyang, Soil Specialist, Soil Plant Analytical Laboratory, Ministry of Agriculture and Forest, Simthokha, Thimphu, Bhutan, as Chair of SEALNET for the period 2018-2020
  • Gina P. Nilo, Chief Agriculturist, Bureau of Soils and Water Management Laboratory Services Division, Diliman, Quezon City, the Philippines as co-Chair of SEALNET for the period 2018-2020
