The 2030 Agenda and opportunities for the Caribbean: “Towards sustainable food systems and agriculture”

The Regional Office of The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-LAC) is pleased to invite you to participate of the thirteen-week virtual seminar on The 2030 Agenda and the opportunities for the Caribbean: “Towards sustainable food systems and agriculture”, starting on 26 September 2018.

Adopted in 2015, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) guide the actions of the international community in achieving growth and development for all, and offer a vision of a fairer, more peaceful and resilient word, in which no one is left behind. Countries are increasingly integrating the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs into their national development agendas and sectoral and cross-sectoral strategies. Food systems and the resource base upon which they depend, have a central role for environmental sustainability and economic and social fabric of society, being key to attaining the SDGs. In the Caribbean, agriculture– intended in the broad sense as crop, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture – is a key sector that is frequently identified as a critical component of economic growth, an anchor for rural livelihood and development, and vital to national and regional food security.

This virtual space aims to strengthen capacities for the implementation of the 2030 agenda in the Caribbean and promote a better understanding of the role of agriculture and food systems in achieving the SDGs, with focus on the SDGs 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 14 and 15. It is a great opportunity for managers and professionals from governments, private sector, academia and civil society of the Caribbean countries to interactively learn and exchange experiences on mainstreaming the 2030 agenda into national policies, plans and strategies related to agriculture and food systems and monitoring and communicating SDG’s progress.

With a dedication of about two hours per week, at the end of the virtual seminar participants will have a better understanding of the importance and relevance of food systems and agriculture in the context of the 2030 Agenda, acquire and share knowledge on replicable/adaptable experiences and tools to implement the SDGs and be in position to assume an active role on its implementation and dissemination.

This initiative is part of a series of three sub-regional virtual seminars on the 2030 Agenda: South America, Caribbean and Mesoamerica. The main outcomes of the virtual seminars include a network of engaged actors and a publication gathering experiences, lessons learned and challenges. These outcomes will be the basis for the Community of Practice on Food and Agriculture and the SDGs for Latin America and the Caribbean, planned for the second semester 2019.

Requirements to participate:
  • Basic knowledge of office software (as Word, Power Point), email and Internet browsing;
  • Internet access from a personal computer or notebook;
  • Time to access the virtual platform, according the estimated dedication time above.
  • Knowledge of office automation (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), fluid handling of email and Internet browsing.
Target audience:

Managers and professionals from governments, private sector, academia and civil society involved in and interested in programs and initiatives linked to the SDGs in the Caribbean countries.

Objective:

Strengthen capacities for the implementation of the 2030 agenda in the Caribbean and promote a better understanding of the role of agriculture and food systems in achieving the SDGs, particularly the SDGs 1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 14 and 15.

Specific Objectives:
  • Contribute to innovation in practices and public policies to achieve the 2030 Agenda through an interactive platform that integrates knowledge and concrete experiences;
  • Strengthen the capacities of participants related to coordination, planning, management, budgeting and monitoring mechanisms for the design, formulation and implementation of policies linked to the development of agriculture food systems in the context of the SDGs;
  • Facilitate spaces for exchanging experiences and highlighting the Caribbean perspective within the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda context through the promotion of multi-actor dialogue;
  • Provide knowledge and tools to the participants so they are in position to assume an active role on the implementation, dissemination, and engagement of different actors of society within the 2030 Agenda.

The virtual seminar has three components, each of which is divided into two thematic sessions.

Component 1:

Food systems and agriculture in the Caribbean: prospectives for achieving the SDGsThematic sessions / Forums

  • 1.2: Raising awareness of and committing to implementing the SDGs

Component 2:

Strategies to localizing and financing 2030 agenda implementationThematic sessions / Forums

  • 2.2: Means of implementation and financial mechanisms

Component 3:

Building capacities for the implementation, follow-up and communication of progress on the SDGsThematic sessions / Forums

  • 3.1: Institutional/inter-institutional coordination, multilevel government collaboration, partnership and stakeholder engagement
  • 3.2: Monitoring and communicating SDGs’ progress

Content for debate

A ten-page document that will set the basis for the discussion in each of the forum for the thematic sessions.

Set of extra tools

Complementary, relevant material gathered for each thematic session, comprising documents, reports, publications, videos and links to projects and initiatives.

Virtual Forums

Space for virtual discussion, interchange and interaction among participants, facilitated by a moderator and set for each thematic session for a period of two weeks . The virtual seminar facilitator will present a set of questions based on the ten-page discussion document; participants will answer and interact through the virtual platform until the forum closure. The facilitator will play the key role of moderating discussions, guide the answers, and, at the end, summarize the debate.

Webinars

Scheduled, videoconference-based discussion on the main findings of the thematic sessions, with participation of FAO experts, especial guests and invited participants of the virtual seminar.

Space to share and promote successful experiences and cases among participants.

Hardware Requirements:

For the perfect completion of the course, the participant must have the following minimum technical specifications:

  • PC with internet connection.
  • The quality and speed of browsing and downloading documents dependent exclusively on the connection bandwidth.
  • RAM memory greater than 1GB
  • Free hard disk space: 52 MBytes.
  • 600 MHz processor or higher.
Software Requirements:
  • The last version of Web browser Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari or Opera, with JavaScript activated and Adobe Flash Player installed.
  • Screen resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels (width per height).

Certification:
At the end of the Virtual Seminar, FAO will issue a certificate of participation for those participants who i) participate with at least two interventions in the forums of each seminar component, and ii) share a case and/or an experience in the lessons learned and successful experiences gallery.
