Stopping and reversing the trends in food crises

The Global Network Against Food Crises as game changer to respond to immediate needs while building resilient agri-food systems for long-lasting solutions to food crises

A side event from the 46th plenary of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the European Union (EU).

The Global Network Against Food Crises was launched by EU, FAO and WFP at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit with the objective of tackling the root causes of food crises and promoting sustainable solutions through shared analysis and knowledge, and strengthened coordination in evidence-based responses. Three years since the launch, the Global Network Against Food Crises has yielded notable results. It produces relevant public goods for decision support at all levels, such as the Global Report on Food Crises, which is internationally recognized as a technical, evidence - and consensus-based reference for a global picture on the severity and scale of the major food and nutrition crises.

The overall purpose of the event is to illustrate to CFS’s members and other relevant stakeholders the current and potential role of the Global Network in addressing food crises, particularly with respect to the long-term viability of agri-food systems, which are increasingly under pressure and changing dramatically due to multiple and simultaneous threats.

The event represents the opportunity to share the latest evidence and discuss on the implications at global, regional and country level of the following issues:

  1. Trends and challenges facing agri-food systems, as presented in the scientific report from Agricultural Research for Development Centre (CIRAD) and FAO
  2. The current food security situation in countries affected by major food crises, related drivers and associated risks; and
  3. The humanitarian and development financial flows to food crisis countries, with a focus on investments in agriculture, nutrition and food security.
