FAO: Reform on agenda for next three years
As the financial crisis may deepen the current economic slowdown, agricultural sectors in many countries will be affected negatively, and those in developing countries will not be spared. The number of undernourished was estimated to have risen by 75 million people in 2007, already, bringing the world total to 923 million.

FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf voiced his concern, once again, as he addressed FAO Member States gathered in Rome, this week.

FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf today appealed to world leaders to meet together next year to start designing a new agricultural order for the benefit of farmers worldwide. The Summit should "come up with $US30 billion per year to build rural infrastructure and increase agricultural productivity in the developing world," he said, a modest amount compared to USD365 billion of total support to agriculture in OECD countries in 2007 and 1 340 billion in world military expenditure the same year by developed and developing countries.
