LEAP guidelines on biodiversity to be tested in the most biodiverse country in the world

20/05/2018

Within the framework of LEAP Partnership, the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment is organizing a workshop on the Biodiversity and Livestock Interface, from 21 to22 May 2018 in Brasilia, Brazil.

Biodiversity is an extremely important resource for Brazil, the country is the most biodiverse in the world, with the largest number of plant species, amphibians and primates. It is also a resource under pressure, although the country has made important efforts to decrease deforestation, habitat loss is still the most significant cause of species extinction and conversion to pastures and feed crops is one of the underlying drivers.

The Guidelines for quantitative biodiversity assessments in the livestock sector developed by LEAP could help address the challenges as those faced by the biodiversity and livestock interface in Brazil. The workshop will be an opportunity to ensure that the LEAP guidelines – striving for global relevance – can adequately address the specific biodiversity and livestock features found in Brazil. It will strengthen the technical contribution of Brazil to LEAP and pave the way for road testing of the LEAP guidelines and the development of Brazilian case studies.
