Workshop held in Uruguay to review regulatory framework to combat IUU fishing
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held a national workshop in Uruguay to assist the country in reviewing its regulatory framework governing fishing and fishing-related activities.
More than 20 participants representing different public institutions participated in the workshop, held between 15 – 19 May, during which current fisheries laws, regulations and administrative procedures were reviewed in detail to identify potential regulatory gaps for these to align with the provisions of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary international instruments to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The workshop helped identify roles and responsibilities of the different national institutions in order to facilitate compliance with the country’s legislation.
The workshop was organized within the framework of the support provided under the Third Support Project to the PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme and Follow-up Action to the 33rd FAO Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture, funded by the Republic of Korea.
The workshop will be followed up with a review of the fishing monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) system in Uruguay by a team of MCS experts. Based on the results of both reviews, FAO will issue a report with the suggestions and opportunities for improvement, for the evaluation by the national authority and a roadmap will be established.
