7 July 2014, Brussels, Belgium

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) conference “Food donation: Fighting food poverty and addressing food waste”, held in Brussels last 7 July, focused on food donation as a key factor in fighting food poverty and addressing food waste. During the conference, the first Comparative Study on EU Member States legislation and practices on food donation was also presented.

The conference and study received technical contributions from FAO, through SAVE FOOD: Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction.

EU Member States collaboration emerged at the conference thanks to the participation of civil society representatives such as Banco Alimentare (Italy), NGO DariAcordar (Portugal) and the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA) together with private sector stakeholders such as Komosie – Federation of Environmental Entrepreneurs in the Social Economy (Belgium).

The conference was followed by the vernissage of the photo exhibition “One Third” by Klaus Pichler. The exhibition is hosted by EESC and will last until 13 July.
