  Why AGRIS's Pre-Digital Records Matter More Than Ever

FAO AGRIS was established in 1975 to facilitate international access to agricultural science and technology information by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Today, the database includes bibliographic records dating back to 1,900. More than 3 million records originate from the period prior to 1990, when scholarly communication was predominantly print-based and preceded the widespread adoption of web publishing.

This long historical coverage positions FAO AGRIS as more than a structured archive of agricultural knowledge spanning over a century of documented research and technical information.

The Importance of Historical Records

Understanding complex challenges in agrifood systems — including soil management, crop production, water use, rural development, and food security — requires more than current data. It requires understanding how solutions were developed, tested, and adapted within specific historical and geographic contexts. What worked in semi-arid Kenya in 1985? How did smallholder farmers in the Mekong Delta manage pest outbreaks before synthetic pesticides became widely available? What irrigation techniques were documented in rural Mexico during the 1950's?

One of the many FAO AGRIS strengths lies in providing access not just to what was studied historically, but to how it was studied, where interventions were tested, and under what conditions they succeeded or failed through grey literature. This kind of resource often contains the detailed field data, baseline studies, and implementation experiences that capture local realities. Unpublished reports, theses, government bulletins, and technical working papers document information of granular context that longitudinal or comparative research depends on.

Ensuring Inclusive Knowledge Representation

The preservation of historical records is especially relevant for research outputs produced in contexts where digital infrastructures developed later or where dissemination occurred primarily through printed institutional publications. National agricultural reports, extension documents and locally produced technical materials contribute to a more comprehensive and geographically diverse evidence base.

By integrating these materials within a structured and multilingual thesaurus-supported system such AGROVOC, FAO AGRIS enhances local representation, discoverability and facilitates consistency across time and regions.

Linking Past and Present Knowledge

As commented before, one significant application of FAO AGRIS lies in its capacity to support longitudinal research by bridging pre-digital and contemporary agricultural literature. While digital tools continue to advance, there remains a tendency to prioritize recent publications over historical records. This presents a gap: many of today's agricultural challenges — from climate adaptation to soil degradation — unfold over decades and require historical data to understand fully. FAO AGRIS addresses this, enabling researchers resources to contextualize current findings within broader temporal patterns.

This historical depth opens up new research possibilities. Scientists use FAO AGRIS to trace the evolution of agricultural practices and identify long-term trends that inform predictive modeling — for example, tracking how crop yields responded to policy shifts or environmental changes over time. Policymakers reference the platform to examine the outcomes of past interventions in comparable socioeconomic or environmental contexts, learning what worked, what failed, and why. Agronomists benefit by revisiting documented techniques from earlier decades — particularly low-input methods developed for resource-constrained settings — to assess their relevance under current climate and economic conditions.

Critically, this approach treats historical records as active resources. Agricultural knowledge operates cumulatively rather than linearly; especially as environmental and economic pressures shift. 

By maintaining searchable access to this continuum of research outputs, FAO AGRIS supports evidence-based decision-making grounded in both historical precedent and contemporary science. In this way, the platform functions as more than a repository: it becomes infrastructure for adaptive, informed, and resilient agrifood systems.
