V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forestry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the first academic institution in the country specializing in forestry. It was founded in 1944 in Moscow by the outstanding Russian biologist Academician Vladimir Nikolaevich Sukachev. The institute was named after him in 1967. In 1959, the institute became part of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences and relocated to Krasnoyarsk.
