The creation of the Brazilian Society for Plant Improvement (SBMP) , a long-standing aspiration of the national scientific community, was discussed and deliberated during BIOWORK II, held at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), between March 2nd and 3rd, 1999.

The objective of the SBMP is to organize Brazilian plant breeders, from public and private institutions, into a society that preserves the interests of the class and encourages research in the area of plant genetic improvement.
