Disposal of obsolete highly-hazardous pesticides, Chittagong

10/03/2015

Mr Mike Robson, FAO Representative in Bangladesh and his team visited Chittagong Regional Medical Supplies Store for talks with the high-level government officials on Monday, 2 March 2015 on the disposal of an old stock of  500 MT DDT.  The ADG of Department of Environment, Mr Hashmi, and Mr Mark Davis, Senior Officer, Pesticides Management from FAO-HQ accompanied the FAOR on the visit.

DDT is a persistent organic pollutant (POP).  Bangladesh is a signatory to the Stockholm Convention on removal of POPs.  The Global Environment Facility funds countries who are trying to dispose of such chemicals safely – usually by high temperature incineration in specialist facilities.

“In tackling this case, the important thing will be to ensure that no further stockpiles of POPs are built up.  For this reason Department of Agricultural Extension and Department of Environment need to work together.”  said Mark Davis
A project has been submitted for approval to GEF with work expected to start during 2016.
