Support to students, providing them with opportunities for field learning, is one of the ways in which the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with in collaboration with the Center of Agriculture and Environmental Studies (CAES) from the Royal University of Agriculture, is contributing to improved fisheries knowledge management in order to achieve sustainable fisheries.

As part of this support, from 8 to 10 August 2023, 57 students participated in a field visit to Stung Chinit Resevoir in Kampong Thom. These were students studying for Bachelor of Science Degrees in Fisheries Science from the Royal University of Agriculture, Prek Leap National Institute of Agriculture, Kampong Cham National Institute of Agriculture, and University of Kratie.

The field visit took place on 9 August, taking the group to Stung Chinit Resevoir in Kampong Thom.

The aim was to:

 •Help students link theories acquired through class lectures to practical experiences for students on various courses including fish diversity and ecology, water quality/limnology, fish population dynamics, and systematic aquatic ecology;

 •Provide an opportunity to learn about the fisheries management, direct observations on areas such as fish migration, fish landings, fish markets, fish habitats to practice fish identification and water quality sampling; and

•To provide students with the opportunity to learn and build collaboration with local fisheries organizations, relevant local authorities and fishing communities at the provincial and community levels for their future internship and research thesis opportunities in fisheries related topics.

Overall, the initiative is made possible through financial assistance from the European Union-funded Cambodia Programme for sustainable and inclusive growth in the Fisheries sector: Capture fisheries (CAPFISH-Capture) project is being implemented between 2019 and 2024 with the aim of achieving a more sustainable, climate resilient and inclusive development of Cambodia freshwater and marine fisheries
