New e-learning on national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for land use

As part of the e-learning series "Building a sustainable national greenhouse gas inventory for Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use" developed by FAO through the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programme, a new e-learning course entitled The national greenhouse gas inventory for land use has been launched. This course is the second e-learning in the series and follows on from the successful course on national greenhouse gas inventories for agriculture, launched back in 2017.

This free online course provides knowledge to build a sustainable national GHG inventory and to assess emissions from the land use sector. It provides an overview of the biological and physical processes behind GHG emissions and removals associated with forestry and other land use. In addition, it offers comprehensive guidance for calculating GHG emissions using the IPCC default method and emissions factors. Lastly, the course includes a series of exercises that allows the user to apply the acquired knowledge.

The course is particularly useful for staff in national agencies to strengthen institutional and technical capacities. The training material can also help them to meet the requirements of the enhanced transparency framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement, built to ensure trust and confidence in countries’ contributions.

Within this ETF, countries have committed to submitting, on a regular basis, a national GHG inventory report to provide information on the progress made in implementing their Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The ETF represents a unique challenge, especially in developing countries, due to significant difficulties in collecting information and in compiling and regularly updating the essential national statistics.

The course offers a helping hand in this endeavour, guiding the learner through the preparation of the GHG inventory. It is also useful for anybody wishing to improve their knowledge on IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodologies and the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) reporting processes.

The course consists of two units, a general and one on land use, with 13 lessons, with a duration of about 17 hours of self-paced learning.  

Each lesson is designed to achieve a specific set of learning objectives, using interactive step-by-step instructions and exercises/questions to help retention and increase learning.
