Objective(s) of the engagement

FAO and Messe Düsseldorf GmbH work together to support the aims of the Save Food Initiative, a global call to reduce food loss and waste. The MoU also envisages support to the FAO-ed 'Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction' as well as 'Studies on priorities for improving food packaging in developing countries'.

Progress to date
  • Successful establishment of the the SAVE FOOD inititive with over 1000 members, aimed at encouraging dialogue between industry, research, politics, and civil society on food losses
  • Co-organization of events including international conferences and exhibitions on food loss and waste, including in China, Egypt and Russia
  • Field studies on food loss and waste across different value chains, including mango and tomato, were conducted in India and Kenya 
  • A Save Food event at Upakovka 2018.  Every year Messe Düsseldorf organizes the ‘Upakovka’ trade fair for the (food) packaging sector, including a seminar on Food Loss and Waste: Challenges and Solutions and its relation to food packaging
