Objective(s) of the engagement

This partnership provides a framework aimed at disseminating FAO knowledge in the area of rural and agricultural finance, risk management and agricultural policy to a select group of financial practitioners, policy makers, the private agribusiness sector, and donors working towards rural financial systems that benefit smallholder families in the developing world. The collaboration also foresees organization and participation in joint advocacy and communication events, capacity development and research on topics related to rural finance and food and nutrition security.

Progress to date
  • In 2015 launched the first Rural and Agricultural Finance Programme, a highly specialized, intensive three-week diploma program on rural and agricultural finance. The Programme offers courses on various specialized topics of rural finance to staff from key public and private institutions involved in rural finance from different parts of the world
  • Moving forward, five annual global training events were delivered in English (Turin, Italy/Utrecht, Netherlands) and two in Spanish (Merida, Mexico) languages, lasting from two to three weeks each and attracting participants from all over the world
  • In January 2021, the first joint online master-class session was delivered with great success, and more than 130 participants attended from all over the world
