The Australian Water Partnership (AWP)

Objective(s) of the engagement

FAO, the Government of Australia and AWP aim to strengthen cooperation between Australian public and private sector water organizations, and relevant in-country partners in the Asia-Pacific region. The partnership promotes capacity development through joint programmes, knowledge sharing and building, workshops, policy dialogues, study tours and technical collaboration related to the management and governance of surface and ground water for agriculture. The partnership also oversees advisory services provided by Australian specialists to FAO and partner countries; staff exchanges and knowledge sharing activities/events; and networking between organizations based in Australia and other countries in the region.

Progress to date
  • Joint implementation and financial contribution by AWP to the Next Generation Irrigation and Water Management for the Asia-Pacific Program (NextGen Program)
  • Knowledge sharing, capacity building and guidance on how water management can be gender transformative and positively influence food security in Myanmar
  • Development of tools, country-specific guidelines, regional lessons, and in-country capacities required to systematically include biodiversity and ecosystem service considerations in irrigation rehabilitation, extension and modernisation programs in South-east Asia
  • Conduction of irrigation performance assessments to utilise emerging technologies and tools to benchmark irrigation system performance. This will also inform decision-making around water operations, water sharing, and infrastructure renewal or expansion carried out in Cambodia
  • Producing a policy synthesis on current and emerging national level gaps and opportunities in the water and food security sectors, based on evident risk in the Pacific. This is being done through knowledge building and analysing national priorities in selected Pacific Island Countries. A framework will be developed to identify intervention areas with the AWP, FAO, and SPC, and will report on cross-sectoral opportunities and partnerships to support sustainable development across water and food security contexts
  • Investing and partnering in the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO-RAP) Regional Water Scarcity Program. The investment is: (a) supporting and augmenting FAO-RAP’s preparation and development of a regional Water Scarcity Program (WSP); and (b) strengthening emerging FAO-Australia partnerships to assist with the management of scarcity in the Asia-Pacific region. Key focus areas in this investment are environment, policy reform and enhancing regional collaboration to effectively address water scarcity
