Objective(s) of the engagement

The objective of this partnership is to contribute to improved food security and nutrition by increasing availability and affordability of nutritious food for all by encouraging small and medium enterprise engagement in developing countries.

Progress to date
  • FAO and GAIN have jointly launched  an online food policy tool, the Food Systems Dashboard, designed to help decision makers to enable timely visualisation of national food systems, understand the interconnections across multiple sectors, perform comparisons with other countries, identify key challenges, and prioritise actions 
  • Joint organization of a trio of virtual roundtables on the role of the private sector in healthy diets, with a focus on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in 2020, as well as related background papers and a polic brief have been produced                                                                                         
  • Joint study on food retail environment in three cities (Tunis, Dar es Salam, Lima) and one joint publication being preparared
  • The partners established an Urban Food Systems Working Group to raise the voices of cities and local governments in the global and national food systems transformation.   
  • In collaboration with INFORMAS, FAO and GAIN mapped the food retail environment in selected cities, which was then used as a basis for recommendations for improvements.
