International Fertilizer Association (IFA)

Objective(s) of the engagement

The partnership will promote sustainable food and agriculture and address related topics such as assessment of soil fertility and the sustainable use of fertilizers. Together, FAO and IFA will encourage the continuous improvement of fertilizer statistics to inform agriculture policy and support evidence-based decision making; support increased agricultural productivity through the implementation of the International Code of Conduct for Sustainable Use and Management of Fertilizers; and work to minimize the impact of fertilizers on the environment through integrated approaches to plant nutrition, including efficiency in use of fertilizers and promotion of bio fertilizers and biostimulants.

Progress to date

FAO and IFA are collaborating towards promoting Sustainable Food and Agriculture and addressing related issues and topics, including the assessment of soil fertility and the sustainable use of fertilizers; and continuous improvement of quality of FAO Statistics to support evidence-based decision making.

IFA organized the IFA Rome Dialogues on March 14th, 2023 to focus on “Innovation” as a central driver and lever to future systemic change and to achieve a more sustainable agricultural intensification, protective of nature, water, and climate, and conducive to increasing farm profitability, land productivity and soil health. Different eminent representatives of the FAO, IFAD and the Science Panel on Responsible Plant Nutrition presented and discussed what innovation entails and how innovative pathways could look like in terms of digitization, land productivity, and best management practices.

Prior to this, FAO and IFA have held joint webinars promoting efficient use and management of fertilizers.
