Global Dairy Platform (GDP)

Objective(s) of the engagement

The partnership builds on shared goals  to optimise the contribution of the global dairy sector to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Specifically, the partnership will focus on enhancing the contribution of dairy to food and nutrition security and its role in livelihoods and economic growth; supporting and promoting improvements in animal health and welfare in dairy systems; and raising ambitions in dairy systems towards climate action and efficient use of natural resources.

Progress to date
  • FAO has had a longstanding collaboration with GDP in support of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock, to which GDP has been contributing financially and in kind since 2017. The collaboration to date has included joint advocacy and awareness raising, knowledge and data sharing, and technical cooperation inter alia, as well as the assessment of global dairy systems in terms of multiple dimensions of sustainability.
  • Joint reports published include “Climate Change and the Global Dairy Cattle Sector”, (http://www.fao.org/3/CA2929EN/ca2929en.pdf); "Dairy Development's Impact on Poverty Reduction”, (http://www.fao.org/3/ca0289en/ca0289en.pdf); and "Dairy’s Impact on Reducing Global Hunger”,  (http://www.fao.org/3/ca7500en/CA7500EN.pdf).
  • In collaboration with IFAD and FAO, GDP is currently developing a Project Document for “Pathways to Dairy Net Zero: Promoting Low-Carbon and Climate-Resilient Livestock in East Africa” to increase resilience and climate mitigation in dairy cattle in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda.
  • In collaboration with ESN, GDP is supporting the International Symposium on Protein and Human Health to be held in September 2023 in the Netherlands and is working on improved methods to assess protein quality.
