The Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation

Objective(s) of the engagement

This partnership aims to enhance agri-food trade competitiveness in developing and least developed countries (LDCs) by supporting the introduction of electronic phytosanitary certificates, or ePhytos, by adopting the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) ePhyto Solution. This will make trade simpler, faster, and more cost-effective while strengthening plant health protection procedures and consumer safety.

The Alliance is led by the Center for International Private Enterprise, the International Chamber of Commerce, and the World Economic Forum, in cooperation with Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and is funded by the governments of the United States, Canada, Germany, and Denmark.

Progress to date
  • The Alliance is working with several countries in Africa, Asia, and South America in implementing the IPPC ePhyto Solution. With Alliance support, in March 2020 Morocco became one of the first countries in Africa to begin exchanging ePhytos with international trading partners and it quickly became one of the most active users of electronic phytosanitary certificates in the world.
  • Building on this success the Alliance, in collaboration with the IPPC Secretariat, has since launched several more initiatives to support ePhyto implementation in other countries, including Cameroon, Colombia, Ecuador, Fiji, Jordan, Madagascar, Senegal, and Thailand. The Alliance is currently scoping the potential for support in several more countries.
