EFABIS Slovenia
EFABIS SLOVENIA is Slovenian official information system on animal genetic resources. The National Animal Genetic Resources Information System is a part of the global DAD-IS, the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System. It is used to inform on and monitor of local livestock breeds held in Slovenia. The website is available in English and Slovenian language. The Public service for Animal Genetic Resources is responsible for the regular updating of the data.

Breed Diversity in Slovenia
Mammalian and avian livestock breeds are reported to occur either in only a single country (local breeds), in several countries in one region (regional transboundary) or in different regions of the world (international transboundary).
Risk Status in Slovenia for cattle, sheep, goat, pig and chicken
Based on the population size reported by countries it is possible to assess the risk of extinction of domesticated animals.
The Cow’s Ball - tribute to the alpine dairy farming

The Cow`s ball in Bohinj is a special event with a very long tradition and celebrate the end of the grazing season. Around the 1950s this event also became a celebration for wider public and today, nearly 10 000 visitors including tourist visit the fair. It’s one of the most recognized tourist event in Slovenia and has been mentioned in the two world’s greatest travel guides (Frommer's 300 Unmissable Events and Festivals Around the World and Lonely planet A Year of Festivals). The main goal is to introduce the life and work on the mountain pastures and to greet the livestock and herdsmen. The programme of the festival is diverse and Slovenian autochthonous breed Cika cattle, herdsmen and Alpine dairymaids are in the spot of the festival.
During the Covid-19 outbreak in spring 2020, the event was organized virtually. The Bohinj Tourist Association prepared the documentary film, which is available at the link: https://www.facebook.com/lakebohinj/videos/1052285385203796/.

FAO’s work related to animal genetic resources

AO's Intergovernmental Technical Working Group for Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture was established in 1997, and it consists of 28 countries, with members elected at each of the Commission's regular sessions. The Working Group's role is to review issues related to animal genetic resources and their management.
Diversity of Animal Genetic Resources

More than 2,400 livestock breeds are at risk of extinction, while 600 are already extinct, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). If managed sustainably, this diversity can be used to increase production and allow livestock to adapt to challenges such as climate change.
