'The Poor man's cow'
Goats are being reared by the poor and marginalized farmers of India as their livelihood. It provides high-quality animal protein viz. nutritious meat and highly palatable milk satisfying the requirements of especially children and old people of rural India. Mahatma Gandhi described goats as “Poor man’s cow" since they are key in ensuring the socio-economic sustainability in villages of developing countries like India.
This picture was taken from a remote village of Shivalik ranges of Dehradun valley. Sharing a old farmer couple's happiness in goat rearing. This was a part of DST-SARTHI (Department of Science and Technology-Sustainable Agriculture Rural Transformation Holistic Initiative) project (Grant no.
