LAUNCH OF UN DECADE ON ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION -
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
VIDEO MESSAGE BY
DR. QU DONGYU, FAO DIRECTOR-GENERAL
4 June 2021
- As the world moves to recover from the pandemic, healthy ecosystems are more vital than ever.
- They are our lifeline for the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat.
- But, pressure on natural resources continues to increase,
- affecting the well-being of 3.2 billion people – 40% of the global population – and fuelling poverty and food insecurity.
- Business as usual is not an option!
- We need to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems worldwide, including our farmlands and forests; our rivers and oceans.
- MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems can help restore ecosystems and safeguard sustainable food production, leaving no one behind.
- FAO is proud to co-lead the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
- Let us join forces to restore ecosystems and reset our relationship with nature by showing it the reverence it deserves,
- while ensuring better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life for all.
