Dear all, My name is Yves Jaques and I work at FAO in Rome for the Statistics department CountrySTAT project where I am the information systems manager. CountrySTAT is a framework for international cooperation on agricultural statistics. Through the distribution of standards, methods and tools backed by regular training sessions it fosters the adoption of best practices for statistical dissemination. Combined with its support for the formation of transversal committees and working groups at the national level it seeks to bridge the space between national institutions, ushering in greater harmonisation and wider use of shared statistical standards in the agricultural sector.

Hi Fellow Participants, My name is Sahdev Singh and I have been studying the role of ICT (a modern technology) in agriculture (a traditional technology) for the last 10 years. In my view, we need to explore ways farmers can use their mobile phones for their knowledge needs. While it is difficult to imagine that small-scale farmers will have internet ready computers any time soon, but many of them are buying mobile phones as demonstrated by rural telephony penetration. Now the big question is how we develop agriculture knowledge content that can be delivered through mobile phones, considering farmers' formal education level, language constraints, and other limitations. I think, a collection of success stories on such efforts will be good for experience sharing. Thanks for the opportunity, Sahdev Singh, PhD Managing Director, Alternatives International, A Capacity Building Network

Hi all; I´m Marcelo Bosch, an Eng. agronomist with a degree in informatics who works at National Institute for Agriculture Technology in Argentina. I´m interested in problems and topics about ICT in Agriculture, both for e-science and e-development. We are exploring better ways to integrate ICT with traditional research and extension in agriculture, specially in a interdisciplinary mode. We think cooperation in everyways is a must, for broaden vision and for better conditions for innovation. I´ll be reading you all, and probably contact some of you with same interestes. Nice to meet you. More information at www.inta.gov.ar/info/ntic.htm

Hello everyone, We facilitators (Charlotte, Lisa and I) welcome you all to the second week of this forum on the role of ICT in agricultural value chains. For those who have just joined us, please browse the questions and comments from last week (questions 1-4) as these threads are still active. We have seven experienced subject matter experts involved who are here to share their experience and answer questions as well. And if you have any questions about technical issues in the forum please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected] and we'll do our best to help you. cheers, Michael

Hi everyone! I am Jimmy, a Professor of Biology and Educational Management at De La Salle University Dasmarinas and currently the president of Pacific Tech or PIPTAS, a small college established only this year. We have small projects on the integration of ICT in local governance and currently initiating the establishment of ABACA TELECENTER in the Province of Catanduanes for our program on GRAFEE, a TeleMicrofinancing to Alleviate Poverty. We are about to put up the public telecenter and still awaiting the support fromt the local people here. In 1999, I have started SURMABIOCOn on manngrove restoration and in 2009 for Mangrove Replantation for Biowalling/Biosheltering against Tidal Surges and AquaSilviculture project of a community of fishermen/farmers. We would like to integrate ICT by putting up a Telecenter in the village elementary school and the Barangay Hall for the community to be informed about Tilapia Saline Aquaculture, Seagrass Growing, Sea Urchin Cages Growing, Crab Condominium for Fattening, etc. Several challenges are now in view particularly on what really are the most beneficial interventions in this regard. During my paper/workshop presentation in the recntly concluded PEMSEA East Asian Congress in Manila, I emphasized on what interventions including land & sea use zoning and use of telematic gadgets are needed so that local coastal dwellers and local government could truly address several issues on agri-aquaculture and marine protection programs. Hi there! I'm Thomas Norrby, based in Uppsala, Sweden, currently working on a SPIDER-project on ICT in agricultural extension in Rwanda. Following this on-line forum with keen interest!

Hi My name is Suparerk Sooksmarn. I am from Thailand, one of major exporting agriculture products. In the past 10 years, I have involved with researches related to the use of ICT for rural development. With the majority of Thai people are in agriculture sector, the government tries to improve the livelihood of the farmers. The outcomes are still mixed. In some cases, there were success but in many there were failure. We have tried to teach farmer computer and internet, but it seems they cannot adopt to the technology and there are many barrier to success. I think this forum can help me in learning more about what is going on around the world relating to the issue.

Hi, I'm Rudy , from Indonesia. I cultivate woodland / timber forestry , and developing and selecting new provenant of seedlings , and also trading forestry & plantation seedlings , such as falcatta / albizia , mahogany ,agarwood, teak , paulownia , sugar palm / Arenga pinnata , cacao , rubber , and others. I also develop & cultivate some intercropping plants ( for food , spices , herbs ) to give better cash performance , adding more income for the farmers , so more people can be interested & involved to start new plantations out from non-productive lands ( outside natural forest , or already exploited forest , to become plantations ).

Hie everyone, My name is Abel Chemura. I work as a researcher at the Coffee Research Institute in Eastern Zimbabwe. My experience are working with smallholder farmers to adapt coffee production to their circumstances and economies so that they can improve in socioeconomic aspects. In line with that, i am also fascinated by the possibilities that e-agriculture (particularly mobile telephony) offers to these farmers. Hope the interaction in this forum will be very useful to everyone and especially to agriculture.
Dear Participants, please tell us a bit about yourselves here.
Hi Lisa and Team, I am sorry this time ,I could not participate for this very important discussion due to my holidays and inaccessibilities. I found the discussions very interesting. I am going through the discussions. If there is any practical issues that I would like to bring in to the groups, I will definitely provide my inputs on your draft reports. ICT is one of the important services in agriculture value chains . Generally access to information and access to markets are largely identified value chain constraints where ICT can play important role . ICT can play important role on empowerment basically rulral agriculture based SMEs can benefits form ICT innovations. One of the challenges is to integrate the ICT with in on going Value chain development and ICT user-friendly content should be designed as per the need of rural agriculture based SMEs.
