Enhancement of Agricultural Water Productivity Project

Enhancement of Agricultural Water Productivity

Egypt faces significant challenges regarding water scarcity, primarily relying on the Nile River for 97% of its water needs, exacerbated by population growth and climate change. To address these issues, the Egyptian government is actively promoting modern irrigation techniques, transitioning from traditional flood irrigation to more efficient methods such as drip and sprinkler systems.

FAO response to the need of applying modern irrigation in Egypt

FAO Egypt along with Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and Ministry Agriculture and Land Reclamation partnered together with funding from the Government of Japan in a project focused on “Enhancing Water Productivity in Agriculture” in governorates of Qena, Minya and Kafr El Sheikh.

The project aims at:

  • Increasing the efficiency of water use by smallholder farmers by at least 20 percent.
  • Increasing crop yields by between ten and 20 percent.
  • Increasing household income by at least 20 percent – after two cropping seasons.

The expected outcome of the Project will be achieved through generation of the following four inter-related outputs:

  1. Irrigation modernizations are demonstrated to optimise energy use and water productivity.
  2. Technical knowledge and skills of small farmers enhanced to effectively promote sustainable irrigation and efficient CSWM practices through the implementation of farmers’ field schools.
  3. Capacities of smallholder farmers are enhanced to effectively promote modern irrigation technologies and CSWM practices in line with GAP principles.
  4. Smallholder farmers engaged in sustainable income-generating activities and their income increased activities in SABD.
