FAO launches a Twitter competition on “Healthy Diet”

On Tuesday 10 September 2019, The Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations (FAO) will launch a competition on “Healthy Diet”, in line with FAO's vision on nutrition, whereby FAO seeks to help improve diets and raise levels of nutrition of the poorest and most nutritionally vulnerable.

10 questions will be posed, one question per day, through FAO-Egypt Twitter account, and FAO-Egypt website

Toward a stronger wheat sector in Egypt

From technical consultations to public-private policydialogue, FAO’s work with the Egyptian Government and partners on Egypt’s wheat sector is leading to greater efficiency, regulatory changes and an environment more conducive to private sector investment. Egypt is one of the world’s largest wheat importers, owing to its limited agricultural land. Almost two-thirds of the total wheat supply is used to produce baladi bread, a staple flatbread.

Greening Cairo’s roofs with nutritious vegetables and fruits

In a suburb area of Heliopolis, about 15 km from Cairo, Latif plants eggplant, spinach, cabbage, oranges, mandarins, parsley, dill, lettuce, tomato and, occasionally, cucumbers. He 'employs' two scarecrows dressed in traditional Egyptian attire to keep away raptors and other birds that come to steal his prized vegetables.

The duck that laid golden eggs

Om Waheed has grown up daughters and toddlers in Koftan, Beni Sueif governorate. She heard about the “revolving fund” of FAO’s project on nutrition and got interested. She participated in training sessions provided by the project on nutrition, animal rearing and micro-project management. The revolving fund targets women who have children mostly under the age of five and aims at improving the nutrition value of meals as well as at increasing the household revenue and eventually the standard of living.

Awards:

Nine winners will be selected by the end of the competition; their order will be as follows: 

  • 3 winners will get 1000 L.E. voucher for two people to dine in a prestigious restaurant in Cairo;
  • 3 winners will get a mix of nutritious snacks, for the amount of 900 L.E.;
  • 3 winners will get a 600 L.E. voucher to buy "vegetables and fruits" from one of the prominent grocery stores in Cairo. 

Winners will be announced on 23 September 2019, and the awards will be given out on 24 September 2019.

Terms of the competition: 

  • The competition is limited only to Egyptian citizens and residents in Egypt .

    Competition’s page of the FAO Egypt website.
  • Send the answers on a daily basis – do not combine them.
  • Any transportation costs needed for winners to receive their prize is on their own account.
