Objective:

To restore and improve the food security, nutrition and self-reliance of vulnerable pastoralists and agropastoralists in Red Sea State.

Key partners:

Beneficiaries reached:

7 000 households (35 000 people).

Activities implemented:
  • Drilled four deep wells and installed solar-powered pumps for each, led by water point management associations (composed of 12 members per site).
  • Distributed 24 720 tonnes of improved seeds (cucumber, millet, okra, pigeon pea, sorghum, tomato and watermelon) and 6 000 hand tools (digging hoes and weeders) to 3 000 vulnerable households.
  • Supported the delivery of on-the-job trainings for all 3 000 heads of households in good crop husbandry practices and integrated pest management (IPM) conducted by relevant government departments.
  • Distributed 3 000 fruit and shade tree seedlings to 1 500 households that were planted in collaboration with local communities.
  • Trained 20 community representatives (five members from each locality) in natural resource management (NRM).
  • Trained 31 women on specific nutritional requirements for household members and food processing techniques, who then disseminated the information to other women in their villages and surrounding villages, reaching up to 1 500 beneficiaries.
  • Conducted 30 awareness-raising sessions on nutrition and nutrition-sensitive agriculture, with the participation of 1 120 beneficiaries.
  • Conducted 20 agricultural extension sessions with an emphasis on the IPM approach, benefiting 2 408 farmers, of whom 601 were women.
  • Distributed 277.6 tonnes of animal feed and 17.5 tonnes of licks to 3 500 pastoral households, 70 percent of whom were female-headed.
  • Supported the delivery of animal health services by training 20 veterinary department staff in disease surveillance, and laboratory diagnosis and control to strengthen the capacity of local veterinary services.
  • Provided 20 community-based animal health workers (CAHWs) with refresher training in animal treatment and vaccination as well as best animal husbandry practices and communication, who then trained animal herders in animal husbandry practices.
  • Supplied the Directorate of Animal Resources at state level with veterinary drugs and vaccines for the provision of free livestock treatment, providing four main veterinary drugs (Intermecrin, Limoxin, Macelan and Solanid) and 40 000 doses of vaccine (20 000 against peste des petits ruminants and 20 000 against sheep pox).
  • Facilitated the delivery of free vaccination and treatment campaigns in all of the target locations, reaching 18 043 animals belonging to approximately 3 600 households.
  • Provided 500 fisherfolk with basic fishing inputs, including 200 nets, 100 kg of fishing lines, 50 cutters, 50 needles and three cast nets.
  • Trained 100 women in five women’s groups in fish drying and processing.
  • Supported the delivery of 31 awareness-raising sessions to 834 people by nutrition and extension departments, during which special emphasis was given to the nutritional value of fish.
  • Selected and distributed 10 000 seedlings of various forest tree species to 3 500 households, under the guidance of the Forests National Corporation, that were planted by State Forestry Cooperation staff at 17 sites, with an average of 195 trees planted at each.
  • Established 21 community-based NRM committees and trained all committee leaders in the planning and sustainable management of natural resources, who then disseminated the information to their communities.
  • Supported the revitalisation of pastures and rangelands by providing 2.5 tonnes of appropriate pasture seed varieties to 3 500 pastoral households. Rehabilitation activities were organized by beneficiaries in close collaboration with the Department of Rangeland and Pasture in Red Sea State.
  • Provided 30 households (150 people) with 18 kg of various green fodder seeds; extension services on spacing, irrigation intervals, harvesting and proper usage in demonstration sites; and hand tools including 30 weeding hoes, 30 digging hoes and 6 spades.
Impact:
  • Enabled beneficiaries in rainfed areas to produce 1.5-2 bags (135-180 kg) of cereal/0.42 ha and 100-200 kg of vegetables and beneficiaries in irrigated areas to produce three bags (270 kg) of crops/0.42 ha and 1 000 kg of vegetables on average, enough to support a family with five children for 3-4 months.
  • Enabled 17 500 heads of livestock to be fed, improving their productivity and maintaining their health during the dry period; increased the quantity of milk produced per goat by 50–100 percent (from 0.5 to 1 litre or more) and led to a reduction in the cost of 0.5 litre of milk from SDG 25 (USD 0.45) to SDG 20 (USD 0.36) improving access to milk for vulnerable communities.
  • Contributed significantly to the reduction in the number of animals sold to address household requirements from two goats to one.
  • Contributed to a reduction in the livestock death ratio, particularly in Tokar locality, with livestock losses decreasing from 50–60 in 2018 to 8–12 in 2020.
  • Increased the quantity of fish caught from 6 to 8 kg/fisherfolk/day thereby enhancing the productivity of fisherfolk.
  • Improved management of limited natural resources.
  • Enabled households engaged in green fodder production to prepare their land and produce green fodder for their own animals’ consumption while selling the surplus to nearby markets.
  • Enhanced the agriculture, livestock and natural resource-based livelihoods of vulnerable communities.
  • Increased access to agricultural inputs and services contributing to improved food security and incomes of households and sustainably restoring the economic situation in the targeted communities.
