FAST Diseases Wildlife Surveillance Course

The workshop was delivered in two parts: 

  1. Induction course (online), which will take place from the 31st of October to the 4th of November 2022;
  2. Face-to-face workshop, which will take place in Ciudad Real (Spain), from the 7th to 10th of November 2022. 

31 attendees from EuFMD Member Nations (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Netherlands, Portugal, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom). 

This course was developed and delivered with the support of the Institute of Game and Wildlife Research (IREC), Universidad Castilla la Mancha, Ciudad Real, Spain.  

The first part of the course (online) was structured in one week, compromising a total of approximately five hours of study, during which the participants will have the opportunity to:  

  • Discuss selected peer review articles; 
  • Watch recorded presentations on relevant topics;  
  • Interact with the experts in the course forum.    

The field component (face to face) of the training occured over three and a half days in November 2022. Activities include seminars, group work and field visits. Topics covered include: 

  • FAST diseases: global overview and the role of wildlife, FAST disease risks in Europe; 
  • Wild ungulate ecology and management in Europe;  
  • Assessing wildlife abundance;  
  • The role of hunting in controlling overabundant wildlife;  
  • Integrated wildlife monitoring: disease and populations;  
  • Surveillance for early detection and to demonstrate freedom of disease in wildlife; 
  • Practical experience in managing cases of transboundary animal diseases in wildlife.
