Discussions related to the appropriation of nature and the notable changes in the rural areas have gained strength in recent times. Usually, such ideas are contextualized in the theme of sustainable development, however, there is still no consensus. The present study is to  analyze the tourism phenomenon and  its interventions in the transformation of rural areas. To do a literature search was conducted an exploratory study based on a qualitative form of data collection in an experience of rural tourism in the state of Santa Catarina Brazil and excerpts from a participatory action research on community and solidarity tourism in the state of Parana, Brazil.
