Fishing Safety

Projects

FAO assists its Members and fisheries sector stakeholders in improving safety at sea in the fisheries sector. A range of FAO technical cooperation programme (TCP) and Trust Fund projects included fishing safety interventions in recent years. Most projects on this subject are awareness raising and capacity building focused. Some projects, such as emergency and climate change adaptation projects, supplied safety equipment (lifejackets, life buoys, VHF radios, Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons or safety grab bags). A few other projects supported the design and introduction of safer fishing vessels, or contributed to normative safety measures through the development of policies, strategies, regulations or safety codes.

A selection of some of FAO’s recent fishing safety projects is presented in this section. Please use the menu on the left for information on individual projects.
