Objective / Goal

This project will generate transformational changes in people, processes, and markets to revitalize planning and implementation capacities of the next generation of leaders on sustainable agrifood systems transformation in three countries, in Lesotho, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. Building partnerships with national and regional organizations engaged in enhancing sustainable agrifood systems transformation and youth involvement will be a crucial element of the implementation of the subprogramme.

This subprogramme, co-led by OSG, RAF, SFE and SFW and implemented in close collaboration with the country offices of the three participating countries, will address the above challenges through the following outcome and outputs:

Outcome: Transformational changes created in people, processes, and markets to revitalize planning and implementation capacities on sustainable agrifood systems in the three participating countries

Output 1: Increased number of young women and men leaders in Africa with competencies in transdisciplinary systems thinking to lead solutions on agrifood systems transformation

Output 2:  Enhanced peer learning between agrifood system practitioners from the public and private sectors to inspire change in processes that will improve agrifood systems

Output 3: Strengthened sustainable business practices to scale up eco-inclusive and social agripreneurship models by young women and men entrepreneurs for SDGs acceleration

The proposal aligns with i) FAO’s Strategic Framework, which considers governance and institutional change a priority trigger to boost transformative processes and have systemic impacts on agrifood systems , the African Common Position on Food Systems  and the Africa Agenda 2063 , a developmental blueprint that envisions Africa becoming a global powerhouse by combining the talents of international, national, public, and private sector actors for a sustainable development paradigm shift for the continent.

This subprogramme will contribute to the RAF programme of work area on "Smart policies, institutions and investments for agrifood systems transformation" as well as to the following Africa Regional Initiatives/Thematic Priorities: Regional Priority 1 Sustainable Agrifood Production Systems and Regional Priority 2 Efficient and Equitable Food and Nutrition Systems. It will closely link to country priorities as established by their CPFs, namely upgrading the Food Systems Governance and Food Systems Components for Inclusive Value Chains, Production, Productivity and Market Access (Lesotho); fostering sustainable agriculture, food and nutrition security and climate resilience (Sierra Leone) and enhancing the enabling environment and responsive institutions for effective and efficient delivery of services (Rwanda).
