Supportive Policy Environment for Artisanal Fish Product Storage

Policy should aim to create an environment which enables the uptake of appropriate technology, good practice, and improved access to infrastructure, services, and markets which minimize food loss and waste (FLW) in artisanal fish product storage. Examples include encouraging the development of purpose built fish storage facilities in processing areas and markets, which cater to the gendered needs of users. Also, the investment in upgrading the skills and knowledge of processors and traders in good storage practice, and facilitating access to affordable credit for investment in improved facilities, technology and equipment.  

Many processors and traders involved in artisanal fish product storage operate as small/medium scale enterprises (SME). Policy that supports the sustainable growth of such businesses is likely to encourage the use of improved practices which contribute to a reduction in FLW.
