In Japan’s Okuizumo region, degraded soils from former iron sand mining were transformed into terraced rice fields nourished by centuries-old, community-managed irrigation canals. Farmers combine rice cultivation, forestry, cattle grazing, and buckwheat farming in a circular system that reuses local resources. This integrated model sustains biodiversity, food, and culture in a resilient mountain landscape shaped by tradition.
Food and livelihood security
In Okuizumo, food and income are sustained through the integration of rice farming, buckwheat cultivation, cattle raising, and forest use. This multifunctional approach allows farmers to diversify production and manage risk in a mountainous area with limited arable land. Japanese Black Cattle provide economic value through high-quality beef, while their manure improves soil fertility in rice paddies. Buckwheat, grown on upland fields, complements rice both nutritionally and economically.
Traditional home gardens and small-scale vegetable farming contribute to household food security and dietary diversity. Forests provide fuelwood, timber, and leaf litter used in composting, reducing dependence on external inputs. Community-based irrigation systems enable coordinated water sharing, ensuring the productivity of terraced fields even under rainfall variability.
While population decline and aging pose challenges, cooperative structures and branding efforts—such as local buckwheat noodles and Wagyu products—help sustain rural livelihoods. The circular use of local resources, rooted in traditional knowledge, continues to support a viable rural economy.
Agrobiodiversity
The Okuizumo system conserves a rich diversity of plant and animal resources adapted to mountainous terrain and seasonal variation. Farmers cultivate local varieties of rice suited to terraced fields, alongside buckwheat, soybeans, vegetables, and traditional grains such as foxtail millet and barley. Crop diversity is shaped by altitude, microclimate, and cultural preference, ensuring staggered harvests and dietary resilience.
Livestock, particularly Japanese Black Cattle, are integrated into the system not only for beef production but also for soil enrichment. Manure from cattle is composted with rice straw and leaf litter to improve fertility, supporting rice and vegetable yields without relying heavily on chemical fertilizers.
The satoyama landscape supports both cultivated and wild species. Forests, hedgerows, and irrigation canals serve as habitats for native plants, amphibians, and birds. Local varieties of crops are selected and preserved by farmers over generations, reinforcing the system’s adaptive capacity and its role in conserving genetic resources in a remote rural setting.
Local and traditional knowledge systems
The Okuizumo system is rooted in knowledge passed down over centuries through farming households and community cooperation. Techniques for building and maintaining terraced fields, managing irrigation canals, and applying organic fertilizers are adapted to the steep terrain, variable rainfall, and limited water availability of the region.
Farmers use traditional methods to prepare manure compost by combining cattle waste, leaf litter, and straw. This practice not only improves soil fertility but also reflects an understanding of local resource cycles. The timing of water allocation is guided by long-established customs, ensuring equitable distribution and avoiding conflict.
Knowledge transmission occurs within families and through village-level institutions responsible for managing shared infrastructure. Seasonal activities such as rice planting, canal cleaning, and harvesting follow a rhythm shaped by both ecology and tradition. Community-based resource governance and intergenerational learning remain central to the system’s continuity.
Cultures, value systems, and social organization
Agriculture in Okuizumo is deeply tied to local culture, seasonal rhythms, and communal values. Farming is viewed not only as a livelihood but as a shared responsibility and a way of preserving identity in remote mountain villages. Community members engage in mutual support during labor-intensive tasks such as rice planting, canal maintenance, and cattle care, reinforcing social cohesion.
Customs related to water management, including established rules and annual rituals for cleaning irrigation canals, embody values of cooperation and fairness. Local food culture is also shaped by the system’s diversity: handmade buckwheat noodles, mountain vegetables, and rice dishes are tied to festivals, family gatherings, and ancestral practices.
Village organizations manage the maintenance of shared infrastructure, coordinate agricultural schedules, and support knowledge exchange. Even as depopulation advances, these social structures continue to function as pillars of the region’s resilience, adapting cultural practices to new realities while maintaining strong ties to land and community.
Landscapes and seascapes features
The Okuizumo landscape is a striking example of human adaptation to mountainous terrain shaped by a history of resource extraction and renewal. Former iron sand mining sites have been converted into terraced rice fields, stabilized by stone walls and supported by intricate, gravity-fed irrigation canals. These features blend seamlessly into the forested mountain environment.
The region’s satoyama landscape forms a mosaic of paddy fields, buckwheat plots, forests, pastures, and homesteads. Forests at higher elevations provide timber, leaf litter, and firewood, while the lower slopes support food production and livestock. Water from mountain streams flows through community-managed channels that feed the terraces and reflect a deep understanding of slope hydrology.
This interwoven design of land use and resource management creates a dynamic and visually coherent cultural landscape. Seasonal transitions—such as rice planting in spring, buckwheat flowering in autumn, and snow-covered fields in winter—reinforce the sense of place and continuity. The result is a resilient agricultural system deeply anchored in its natural surroundings.
