The government recently announced an agreement with the Government of the United States of America to implement a duty-free tariff quota (TRQ) for wheat. The agreement allows for the importation of 750 000 tonnes of wheat under TRQ on an annual basis, which represents around 10 percent of the country's average annual wheat imports. The country imports around 60 percent of its wheat consumption requirements, mostly from the Mercosur countries, mainly Argentina, but also Paraguay and Uruguay. Imports from all other origins are subject to a 5 or 10 percent duty, depending on the type of wheat. While in 2013, 2014 and 2016, wheat imports from the United States of America exceeded 750 000 tonnes, in 2017 and 2018, the volume imported was lower.
