El Salvador: Government to distribute fungicide to combat coffee rust

20/06/2014,

El Salvador's Ministry for Agriculture and Livestock has confirmed that the distribution of fungicides to some 17,000 coffee farmers will begin on 21 June 2014, in an effort to combat the rust fungus attacking plantations on a national scale. d 14 distribution points where established across the country, with distribution to begin in the Cordillera del Balsamo area and San Salvador volcano region. Rust levels in El Salvador are reported to currently stand at 5-6%, with higher altitude regions experiencing higher levels due to the climate. The fungicides were acquired through the Bolpros products and services market fund. Some coffee producers have opted to grow cocoa instead, due to the impact of rusting, since cocoa is not being affected by this current rust plague.
