21/04/2015,

The Government of India is for the third time extending the deadline to implement the National Food Security Act (NFSA) by an additional 6 months. The NFSA was passed in September 2013 and to date only 11 states met the April 4th deadline, leaving 25 states still pending. The new law aims at providing 5 kilograms of subsidized food grains per month to two-thirds of the country's population at a price of Rs 1-3/kg (USD 0.02-0.05). The government previously gave a stern warning that it will stop supply of subsidised food grains to states that did not meet the April deadline however, it will continue to provide subsidised food grains through its Public Distribution system (PDS).
